Universal Destinations & Experiences aims to redefine the family-friendly theme park with its latest project—Universal Kids Resort. Set to open in 2026 in Frisco, Texas, this immersive destination is designed for families with young children, marking a first-of-its-kind venture for the company.
The resort will feature multiple themed lands based on beloved characters from DreamWorks Animation, Illumination, and Nickelodeon, bringing to life the whimsical worlds of Shrek, Puss in Boots, Trolls, Gabby’s Dollhouse, SpongeBob SquarePants, Minions, and Jurassic World.
A Theme Park Tailored for Young Adventurers
Unlike Universal’s larger parks, which cater to thrill-seekers and movie lovers of all ages, Universal Kids Resort focuses on creating a space where young children can explore, play, and interact with their favorite characters in a more approachable, family-friendly setting.
Sarah Gibbon, VP & Executive Producer of Universal Creative, described the vision behind the park:
“At each point, we considered how we could design a place especially for kids where they could explore, imagine, and adventure with their families and friends. They’ll be able to do all this while being fully immersed in some of their favorite stories – ones full of curiosity, laughter, and joy.”
Immersive Lands Full of Playful Adventures
Each section of the park will offer hands-on experiences tailored to young audiences:
- Shrek’s Swamp Playground – Kids can stomp, climb, and play in a swamp-themed playground built by Shrek himself, celebrating the magic of friendship and family.
- SpongeBob SquarePants’ Undersea Adventure – Families can explore Bikini Bottom, earn a boating license, and relax on the beach while soaking in the nautical nonsense.
- Minion Mayhem – A peaceful retreat is hilariously disrupted as Yellow Minions try to wrangle their unpredictable Purple counterparts, leading to water-soaked fun.
- Jurassic World’s Dino Discoveries – Budding paleontologists will get up close with dinosaurs through interactive experiences designed just for young explorers.
- Trolls Musical Festival – A colorful, glitter-filled fest where guests can sing, dance, and celebrate with Poppy, Branch, and friends.
- Puss in Boots’ Kitty Carnival – A playful adoption event featuring Puss in Boots, Kitty Softpaws, and Perrito, with fun rides, sideshow games, and festive food.
The central hub of the resort will feature shaded play areas and interactive spaces, offering families a chance to relax and recharge. Kids will also get to meet characters like Gabby from Gabby’s Dollhouse in a one-of-a-kind immersive retail experience.
A Family-Friendly Stay with an On-Site Hotel
To extend the experience beyond the park, Universal Kids Resort will include a themed 300-room hotel designed with families in mind. The resort will offer convenient access to the park, making it easy for families to stay, play, and unwind after a day of adventure.

Universal’s Expansion into Family-Focused Destinations
Originally announced in January 2023, Universal Kids Resort represents a major step in Universal Destinations & Experiences’ strategy to reach new audiences in emerging markets. Unlike its Hollywood and Orlando counterparts, this park is uniquely designed for younger guests, making it an exciting addition to the theme park landscape.
