If you’ve been on a cruise before, you might already know that power outlets in cruise cabins are often limited, usually found only at the desk or in the bathroom. In response to this, some cruise lines have started adding USB chargers near the bed, but even this might not be enough if you’re traveling with teens or need to charge multiple devices for your group. Travelers have long brought along extra gear like power cords and multi-plug outlets to ensure they have enough charging options. However, Royal Caribbean has recently updated its prohibited items list to include these “multi-plug outlets” due to potential safety risks.
Multi-plug outlets, which expand a single electrical outlet to accommodate several devices at once, are now listed under “Flammable Items” on Royal Caribbean’s banned list, along with extension cords and power strips. The concern is that overloading an outlet could lead to overheating, which poses a fire risk or could result in power loss. This may come as an unwelcome surprise to passengers who rely on these gadgets to charge phones, laptops, tablets, hair tools, and more.
The list of prohibited items includes other potentially hazardous items like clothing irons, travel steamers, hot plates, tea cup immersion heaters, and various fuels and flammable liquids. In addition to household items, Royal Caribbean has prohibited tools and self-defense items such as hammers, saws, brass knuckles, stun guns, and throwing stars.
Given these new restrictions and the often limited charging options on older ships, it may be worth considering packing lighter. While devices like phones and e-books offer entertainment during downtime, leaving them behind could give you more time to explore the ship’s amenities, relax in lounges, and enjoy the onboard experience.
