Exploring Savannah Georgia

0

While staying in Hilton Head at the end of the Summer we decided to do a day trip to Savannah, Georgia.  A city that has been on my bucket list for a very long time, Savannah is known for its cobblestone streets, horse-drawn carriages and  architectural treasures.

Savannah Georgia - carriage ride Lafayette square

Just an hour from our hotel, I was a little bummed to find it raining when we arrived.  Undeterred, we stepped into a shop to check out some shells and the sun was shining wen we came out!  How often does that happen?  Never.

Savannah Georgia - Savannah River boat

We parked at the bottom of the city on East River Street and decided to walk up to Forsyth Park.  The nice people at Old Town Trolley Tours gave us a free map and we were off.

Our plan was to see as much as we could so we headed up Abercorn Street towards The Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist.

Savannah is pretty much a grid so it’s very easy to navigate.  One thing we noticed right away were the squares – little parks within a city block.  These quaint spaces were originally intended to provide colonists space for military exercises, but today they are named in honor or in memory of a person, persons or historical event, and many contain monuments, markers, memorials, statues, plaques, and other tributes.  Twenty-two in total, I think we managed to visit almost half.

Savannah Georgia - Madison Square

Each square sits at the center of a ward, which often shares its name with its square. The lots to the east and west of the squares, flanking the major east-west axis, were considered “trust lots” in the original city plan and intended for large public buildings such as churches, schools, or markets. The remainder of the ward was divided into four areas, called tythings, each of which was further divided into ten residential lots.

The homes in the squares were some of the prettiest I have ever seen.  Many have been converted into businesses or Bed & Breakfasts, but there are still some single family homes. Many of the homes that run on the side streets are town homes that are joined together.

Savannah Georgia - historic district

As we continued our stroll through the city we spotted the Colonial Park Cemetery.  The final resting place for many of Savannah’s earliest citizens, it served as the primary public cemetery from 1750 to 1853.  Within the 6 acres of property that makes up Colonial Park Cemetery there are about 12,000 people buried, despite the fact that there are only about 700 grave markers. Many people were buried in mass graves. Others had their grave marker knocked over or destroyed.

Along the back of the cemetery wall hundreds of grave stones were placed there because they were damaged and/or falling apart.

Savannah Georgia - Colony Park Cemetery

My kids enjoyed walking through the cemetery looking at the head stones and seeing the families who are buried together in the large brick tombs.  Every new experience is a learning opportunity, so it was important for them to learn about the different ways that families chose to stay together – even after they’ve passed.

Savannah Georgia - Colony Park Cemetery

As we through the second gate of the cemetery we spotted the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist.  There is a boulevard like road that divides the two, but you certainly can’t miss the steeples towering 207 feet in the air. The church is also pristine white, that will catch your eye from many streets over.

Savannah Georgia - The Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist

This was the first time my boys have been inside such a grand cathedral and they were in awe. I will write a whole article just for this church because it’s beauty deserves its own feature.

Just past the Cathedral is Lafayette Square. It is here that you can find the Hamilton-Turner Inn. Constructed in 1873, this gorgeous Victorian mansion was the height of luxury at that time. It was designed with everything from talking pipes in the walls to a dumb waiter and even skylights. Lafayette Square features a fountain that my boys made wishes into, but I just sat in awe of how beautifully the homes in this area had been taken care of.

Savannah Georgia - Hamiton-Turner Inn

Across the square sits The Andrew Low House. The house was built in 1849 for Andrew Low II, a cotton merchant that immigrated to Savannah from Scotland. Mr. Low’s daughter-in-law Juliette Gordon Low founded the Girl Scouts and when she passed away, she bequeathed the carriage house on the property to the Savannah Girls Scouts, who still use it presently.  Tours of the house are offered on the hour and half-hour daily.

Savannah Georgia - Andrew Low Residence

From there we ventured up a couple more blocks to see the Forsyth Fountain. The ornate fountain sits right in the middle of one of Savannah’s most beloved landmarks.

Inside the park is a Confederate monument, the fountain, which is reminiscent of fountains in the Place de la Concorde in Paris, and an American-Spanish war statue.  The sun was incredibly hot so the mist coming off the fountain was welcome.  We really enjoyed just sitting in the middle of the park watching people wander around.  There were a couple artists playing music along the side and a lot of people were strolling through with their dogs.

As we walked back towards the Savannah River we checked out some of the shops and stopped for snacks at a very cool cafe that had a ‘Central Perk’ feeling with its miss matched furniture and laid back setting.

There is definitely no hustle or bustle in Savannah.  The relaxed atmosphere is really nice.

We passed through 5 more squares before coming up to Savannah’s City Hall.   Opened in 1906, it has served continuously in this role for since that time.

Savannah Georgia - City Hall

Just beside it sits the Cotton Exchange, which housed the custom house, a post office, and newspaper offices.

Savannah is home to almost 140,000 people, but it feels like a small town.  There are lots of places where you can sit and enjoy the city or learn about its incredible history.  Almost every building in the city has a story to tell.

East Bay and East River both have great places to shop or grab a bite to eat.  Savannah’s Candy kitchen is a must visit to grab some of their famous Pralines, taffy or fudge.  I also loved The Peanut shop.  If you love to snack on peanuts, their selection is out of this world!

Take a Tour of The Edsel and Eleanor Ford House

When planning our trip to Detroit this Summer, one of places I wanted to visit the most was the Edsel and Eleanor Ford House. Edsel & Eleanor Ford House - view from the front I don’t remember how I found it, but I fell in love with the pictures online immediately. I love history, but love historic mansions more. There is something about the way they preserve a time passed in such a perfect way. Located on the shores of Lake St. Clair, at a place known locally as Gaukler Pointe, this estate isn’t just a house, it is an incredible property that incorporates many buildings that the Fords used during their 47 years in residence. Edsel, the only son of automotive magnate, Henry and Clara Ford, married wife Eleanor in 1916. Together, they had four children: Henry Ford II, Benson, Josephine, and William Clay Ford. In 1926 they began construction on their family home, and moved in when it was completed in 1929. The 60-room , 30,000-square-foot house is built in an English Cotswold cottage style, a design they fell in love with while in England.  The Albert Kahn design included sandstone exterior walls, a traditional slate roof with the stone shingles decreasing in size as they reach its peak, and moss with ivy grown across the house’s exterior. Edsel & Eleanor Ford House - terrace Edsel & Eleanor Ford House What makes this home special is that is filled with original Ford family items.  When Eleanor passed away in passed in 1976 she made provisions in her will that would ensure that the home was taken care of and used for the public.  Many of the home’s original Art pieces were donated to the Detroit Institute of Art, but everything else remains as it was the day Eleanor passed away. When you arrive at the Edsel and Eleanor Ford House you pass through the guard house and drive up to the Activites Center where you can park your car.  Here you can purchase tickets to visit the house, grab a snack at the Cotswold cafe or pick up some items in the gift shop. Built in the former location of greenhouses, a service building and maintenance garage, the Activities Center was also designed by Albert Kahn Associates in the same architectural style as the original buildings. In fact, portions of the building are the original historic structure. The clerk will give you a timed ticket and you can wait outside the gift shop for the bus to take you up to the house or wander the grounds and check out the lake as you make your way along the path. When you arrive at the main house staff will welcome you in when your tour is ready to start. We started our tour in the Garden room that over looks the water.  From there we made our way into the Gallery the largest room in the house. This long, open space is paneled with sixteenth-century oak linenfold relief carved wood panelling with a hooded chimney piece from Wollaston Hall in Worcestershire, England. Edsel & Eleanor Ford House - ball room The couple loved to collect rare art pieces, and the home was filled with paintings from Cézanne, Degas, Matisse, Van Gogh, Renoir and Fra Angelico.  While much of their collection is now on display at the DIA, there are still a couple pieces in the home.   On the table in the Gallery sits a Ming Dynasty vase that is more than 2,000 years old. From there we visited the Study, that also featured rich wood paneled walls.  On the desk sits another Ming Dynasty vase, that Eleanor had converted into a lamp.  In fact, there are two such vases in the home that are now lamps. Edsel & Eleanor Ford House - study Just down the hall is the dining room.  When the Fords lived in the house it was lit by natural or candle light only.   There was a button hidden on the floor that Eleanor would push with her foot to alert the staff she needed something or that they were ready for the next course. Edsel & Eleanor Ford House - study The family had two kitchens.  The first was a classic kitchen that was more like a servery, while the second space was set up much like one you would see in a restaurant with industrial appliances and stainless steel surfaces.  The kitchen was updated with a dishwasher and a fire suppression system after Eleanor passed away when the home was being used for events. Edsel & Eleanor Ford House - kitchenDSC_7280 In the kitchen there is a large bank of electric fridges. Edsel & Eleanor Ford House - wall of fridges in kitchen The kitchen was manned by one chef and 5 assistants.  She would make enough food for the family, and then the staff would have that same meal the next day for lunch. Down the hall was the flower room, a dedicated space where staff would cut and prepare fresh arrangements for each room. Edsel & Eleanor Ford House - floral room Just before you head upstairs you will pass by Edsel’s den or study.  The oldest room in the house,  it also features a secret door with stairs to the basement.  If he needed to getaway for safety, Edsel could leave through a tunnel passage, that lead to the power house. Edsel & Eleanor Ford House - Edsel's study Four rooms in the home were created in an Art Deco style for the boys; their bedrooms, the lounge and their study. Edsel & Eleanor Ford House - boys lounge Edsel & Eleanor Ford House - the boy's lounge The Hallway leading to the second floor features two massive staircases and a portrait of Edsel. Edsel & Eleanor Ford House - front hallwayEdsel & Eleanor Ford House - portrait of Edsel in upstairs hallway Upstairs there are 7 bedrooms and Eleanor’s study.  She re-decorated some of the rooms to her taste after Edsel passed away.  She was very tiny, so many of the furnishings are small to fit her frame.   Her study was re-done in a French style with rounded corners and light pinks. Edsel & Eleanor Ford House - eleanor's studyHer bedroom was also done in soft colors and florals. Edsel & Eleanor Ford House - Eleanor's room 2Edsel & Eleanor Ford House - Eleanor's room The niece of JL Hudson, Eleanor’s closet was stocked with clothes from his department store. Edsel & Eleanor Ford House - Eleanor's closetOutside there is a large pool and a pool house for guests to lounge in. Edsel & Eleanor Ford House - poolEdsel & Eleanor Ford House - pool house One of my favorite buildings on the property is Josephine’s playhouse. This incredible little house was created with many rooms for the Ford kids to do crafts or play dress up.  There was even a working fridge, a bathroom and special monogrammed dishes with Josephine’s Initials on them. Edsel & Eleanor Ford House - playhouse Edsel & Eleanor Ford House - play houseEdsel & Eleanor Ford House - playhouse If you are St.Clair Shores area of Michigan I highly recommend a visit to The Edsel and Eleanor Ford House.  This home is filled with history of a time gone by, and told by docents who appear to know the family intimately.

When “Rivers of Light” opens at Disney’s Animal Kingdom in 2016, it will be an innovative experience unlike anything ever seen in a Disney park, combining live performances, floating lanterns, water screens and swirling animal imagery. “Rivers of Light” will come to life as a pair of mystical hosts comes to Discovery River bearing gifts of light. Disney World River of light Taking place on Discovery River between Discovery Island and Expedition Everest, the hosts of the show will set out from the shore on elaborate lantern vessels for a dramatic dance of water and light to summon animal spirits. With the storytellers as your guides, the wonders of “Rivers of Light” builds to a stunning crescendo. Animal Kingdom Rivers of Light “This is going to be a ceremonial event that will happen on our lake,” said Imagineer Joe Rohde. “It takes the idea of the special nature of the animals that are in this park and turns it into a celebration of the beauty of these animals. It starts simply and humbly, continues to unfold and grow as bigger and more elaborate lanterns appear, and then huge curtains of water and light emerge from the water with animals within them. And ultimately it takes off into the sky.”
