An Incredible Day Navigating Watkins Glen State Park, NY

It all started last July when I spotted a picture someone shared of the falls at Watkins Glen State Park in New York State. That must be photoshopped I thought. The image looked like it was taken from a movie scene – falls, plunging caverns,  carved rocks with water flowing through them and moss growing everywhere. But the more images I searched the more I became intrigued with this location. Watkins Glen State Park, NY 8 We hadn’t settled on a destination for our end of the Summer road trip so I showed my husband the images and we decided this would be the perfect spot for our vacation. I will fully admit that when we arrived I just expected there to be a couple bridges and a few falls, but Watkins Glen State Park was so much more. We chose to visit on a Tuesday morning, but the park was pretty busy. When you arrive there is an $8 fee, but the parking lot is quite close to the entrance. From the moment your arrive, this park’s beauty is evident. The parking lot sits along a chiseled wall and the sentry bridge is visible as soon as you approach the entrance tunnel. Watkins State Park Sentry Bridge entrance Once up the staircase your first views of the park are spectacular. View of Watkin Glen State Park from Sentry Bridge And as incredible as my first look was, it just got better and better as we made our way along the gorge trail.    Watkins Glen State Park boasts 19 waterfalls, 200ft cliffs and views that are spellbinding. Watkins Glen State Park, NY There are also so many charming aspects of the park.  The waterfalls descend like steps from the top of the park, each one flowing into the next. When you enter from the Sentry bridge you are at the bottom moving up the gorge. The first ones you will see are the cascade at the entrance, followed by Minnehaha, which flow into a heart shaped pool. Watkins Glen State Park Minnehaha falls If you are planning a vacation to the Finger Lakes I highly recommend adding Watkins Glen to the top of your list.  It will not disappoint – I promise. Tips:
  • The walk is family friendly, but not stroller friendly or good for little ones. The pathways can be narrow and much of the walking area is uneven, muddy and some of the rocks underfoot are loose.  There are also some areas where the edge of the path is very close to the escarpment.
Watkins Glen State Park, NY 9
  • Wear good footwear like sneakers or running shoes because the park has 800 stone stairs that guide you through the trail.
  • Bring sunscreen AND Bug spray. Some of the trail is sunny and there are many areas that a quite buggy.
  • Bring beverages, or snacks with you.  There is also a small snack bar and ice cream shop in the parking lot if you need more.
  • Plan to visit in the afternoon. We arrived in the morning and the park was packed. As we were leaving, however, the parking lot was emptying out.
  • Give yourself 3 hours to see the park properly.
  • Make sure your camera has a lots of memory because you will take lots of pictures!

Sail The High Seas with The Pirate Ship Cruise In Puerto Vallarta {Video Review}

Adventure on the high seas awaits on the Marigalante pirate ship in Puerto Vallarta! Pirate dinner cruise Puerto Vallarta While in Mexico last month I sailed on the ship, which is an exact replica of the famous Santa Maria Galleon Columbus sailed to the new world. Our evening cruise featured a crew of 12 swash buckling pirates who performed and danced for us! Pirate dinner cruise Puerto Vallarta - pirate adventure As the ship started its journey we were treated to a beautiful view of the city at dusk. Pirate dinner cruise Puerto Vallarta - city at dusk Halfway through our evening we descended to the ship’s dining room where the crew served up a hearty meal and some pretty fantastic music.  There were 2 meal choices on the menu; Filet Mignon and Shrimp or Chicken Cordon Blue.  I chose the Filet and it was a nice dinner.  When you arrive onboard you are assigned a pirate, who will serve you your beverages and meal.  It’s a great set up because they double as the show’s performers! Pirate dinner cruise Puerto Vallarta - dinner time After dinner we danced and the crew performed some more! I highly recommend this show for vacationers looking for a fun night out. The food was good, the service was fantastic and the show was entertaining. Plus, the ship has lots of character that adds to the adventure.  I almost fell over when I opened the door to the stall and this was looking back at me! Pirate dinner cruise Puerto Vallarta - bathroom This cruise is best suited for adults, because it goes late and there is an open bar, but kids can come along too parents just need to know that you won’t dock until around 11pm. Enjoy a Taste Of The City With Vallarta Food Tours

3
Created by a couple who loves food and travel, Vallarta food tours(VFT) gives travellers visiting Puerto Vallarta a taste of the city. This is the best way to learn more about a destination because visitors get the best recommendations from those who know – and don’t have to do the leg work. I will fully admit that I am incredibly picky and not overly adventurous when it comes to food when I travel. This is the reason why I prefer to cruise as my mode of transportation – as the food is predictable, and more like what I eat at home. For this reason, I was a little apprehensive about this food tour. Our tour guide, Ricardo, set me at ease right away and informed me that all of the stops on our tour were highly vetted by their team. When determining a stop to add to the tour VFT looks for cleanliness, a place that is aesthetically pleasing, and local cred from the community. When you do the tour you will taste each location’s house specialty for that time of day. Vallarta Food Tours - Tacos Don Juan At our first stop, Cevicheria El Guero(291 Madero St.) we tried smoked marlin, ceviche, a Mahi fish taco and the Hibiscus tea. Our sampler was accompanied by some fresh taco chips and pico de gallo. Thumbs up all around. This was definitely a good way to start our night! Vallarta Food Tours - mahi taco From there we headed out to our outdoor first stand, Tacos Don Juan(400 Cardenas St. and Aguacate St.). Immediately, I had my first reservation. This would be the healthiest option on our tour, and for me, the most adventurous. We would be having the beef head steamed taco. Ricardo tried to assure me that it wasn’t the brain – or tongue – but I was undeterred.   Junior, the stand’s operator, could see that I was apprehensive and offered me some brisket.  We were back in business. Vallarta Food Tours - Tacos Don Juan Just a couple blocks away we stopped at Tacos Memo(400 Basilio Badillo St. and Aguacate St.) where they were grilling skirt steak on a grill out back that would be sliced up and served on a steamed tortilla that was crispened on the flat top and topped with gouda, beans, beef, onions, cilantro and your choice of sauces. Called the volcano taco with Adobe beef, this one was really good. Here we also had some Maracuya tea with passion fruit that a woman was offering to the side of the stand. Vallarta Food Tours - Volcan taco From here we stopped in to Patio De Mi Casa, a rustic stone oven Pizzeria – but not for Pizza, but to try some Mezcal, ‘the cooler Uncle of Tequila.’ This potent liquor is often consumed straight with an orange that has been sprinkled with paprika. Vallarta Food Tours - Mezcal tasting A this point our tour moved to a different part of the city so we grabbed a local bus and jetted across town. Most of the Taco stands in Puerto Vallarta have been in the same location for decades. These stands, locations, and recipes are passed down through the family – and often the parents are still on site as the kids prepare their specialties. From here Ricardo look us through the city showing us some of it’s off the beaten path locations. We visited the former home Elizabeth Taylor shared with Richard Burton, checked out some beautiful historical buildings and meandered through the streets like locals. Vallarta Food Tours - Taylor Burton Bridge Food aside, this guy knows so much about the history of his city. After some more sight-seeing we stopped at a stand that was making Churros! A husband and wife operation, Julio’s Churros, they set up shop at 6 and serve their churros coated in cinnamon sugar until the batter is gone. Vallarta Food Tours - Julio's Churros Each stick is .20 and well worth every penny! Like many of the stands the we stopped at the couple’s kids were close by playing quietly while their parents worked. Tourists walking the boardwalk can find this stand easily by looking for the LEY grocery store, and the traveling just one block up to the corner of Uruguay and Peru. Vallarta Food Tours - Junlio's churros Next, we moved on to  La Tia Mariscos(235 Honduras St.) where the whole family was on hand to ensure every diner left happy. The stand’s founder La Tia wasn’t behind the grill, but she sitting off to the side watching her son-in-law prepare some of her specialties. Here we had a special soup that was made from shrimp broth, hot sauce, and grilled mahi. What didn’t go into the soup was grilled up on the flat top with onions and placed in a tortilla. Diners can add fresh garnishes, and a variety of sauces to their taco as well. This location and menu is so popular that the family now owns 3 stands! Vallarta Food Tours - La Tia's Taco Marlin Our last location took us just a block from our hotel. At El Carboncito(137 Honduras St.) we had a pork taco that was served with a warmed grilled pineapple, onions, garnish and your choice of sauce. Vallarta Food Tours - El Carboncito This one was one of my favorites – likely because I love pineapple. Oddly enough, with all the walking and talking that we had done I wasn’t as stuffed as I thought I would be. The servings at each stop were just enough to give us a sample of the goodness. Vallarta Food Tours - pozole rojo The biggest surprise? NOT one stand served chicken or ground beef! Real Mexican Tacos are not made from either one of these meats. Because you can’t always be sure of the level of cleanliness of a location and whether or not the food has been safely handled or stored, we often stick to larger establishments when we are dining on vacation. Taking the tour allowed me to try some of the local food, while removing the concern that I might get sick. At the beginning of the tour we were told to look at the stand for a couple of things that would determine if it was safe to eat from. Cleanliness of space; boards and area, presentation of chef and whether or not there are two staff on hand – one to prepare the food and one to handle the money were a few of the indicators that Ricardo told us to look for. Vallarta Food Tours - Tacos Don Juan 2 I can’t recommend this tour enough. Skip the city tour – take this tour and get the benefit of a full belly when you’re done. Plus, you will now have some low-cost dinner options for the rest of your vacation! No Senior Frogs. Support the community that makes the city what it is. For the 11am tour, which is better suited for families, the guides take you to two stands, and mom and pop restaurants that are off the tourist path, and that have been in their location for more than 20 years. This tour is great because it allows kids to experience the culture and cuisine, while learning more about the city they are visiting.

Buenaventura Grand Hotel and Spa Deluxe Room TOUR{Video Review}

This past week I had the pleasure of staying at the Buenavtura Grand Hotel and Spa in Puerto Vallarta.  It has been almost 20 years since I have visited Puerto Vallarta so I was excited to check out the city and take in the sights.    This mid-sized all inclusive resort is located in the heart of Puerto Vallarta just 15 minutes from the airport, and a couple minutes walk from the famous Malecon boardwalk. Buenaventura Grand Hotel and Spa Deluxe Room - pool We will be posting a full resort review soon, but for now, here is a look at my room. The resort offers a variety of rooms to accommodate all budgets.  My room, the Deluxe King room, was located on the third floor.  It was nicely appointed, and perfect for my 4 night stay. To the right of the entrance, the bathroom featured a marble vanity, hair dryer, and a two person shower. Buenaventura Grand Hotel and Spa Deluxe Room- bathroom Inside the shower there is a bit of seat for those who want to shave their legs or take a rest.

The hotel provides some soaps and lotions but be sure to bring your own shampoo and conditioner because they’re not included. Buenaventura Grand Hotel and Spa Deluxe Room - bathroom lotions The cupboard to the left of the entrance had room to store your suitcase, some clothing hangers, an iron and ironing board.  The second cupboard has a safe and some shelves to store more clothes or travel gear. My room came with a king sized bed, but couples looking to travel with their kids can request a room with two double beds. Buenaventura Grand Hotel and Spa room tour In the corner there is a small breakfast table with two chairs, and a love seat.  Over the dresser in the middle of the room sits the Flat screen TV, which shows almost 100 channels, but only a small percentage of them are English.  There are, however, some movie channels, CNN and some LA news stations in English so that visitors can stay current with what is happening at home. Buenaventura Grand Hotel and Spa Deluxe Room 2 On a small table beside the dresser was coffee maker with a couple mugs.   The mini bar was filled with soda, bottled water and beer that was refilled daily. My room was on the outside of the building so it overlooked a side lot.  Families who want a better view can upgrade to the oceanview suites that overlook the pool and resort or the Junior Suite that sleeps 4 with a jacuzzi that overlooks the ocean.
