Royal Caribbean Debuts New Madagascar Themed H20 Zone For Quantum of the Seas!

3
With just under two months to go before the inaugural cruise, Royal Caribbean’s new ship Quantum of the Seas has began her river conveyance, exiting the Meyer Werft shipyard headed to the Dutch North Sea port of Eemshaven. Quantum of the Seas begins her river conveyance As crews work to complete the ship Royal continues to unveil more details about the liner on their site. I have been excited to hear more about the kid’s spaces and was delighted to come across a photo of the new Madagascar Themed H20 Zone. A complete departure from the Britto themed splash area that Royal designed for their Oasis and Freedom class ships, this new water space expands upon the partnership Royal has with Dreamworks. The swim area they show in their promo picture features a multi-level pool and current pool.  I had been holding out hope that the new design would include a water slide, but Adam Goldstein, Royal’s CEO has said that,
“At this time we don’t have plans to build water slides; however, we will send this suggestion along to our New Build team.”
Madagascar Themed H20 Zone on Quantum of the Seas Official plans of the ship show an additional pool area behind the H20 space, and an adults-only solarium at the front of the ship. Quantum of the Sea ship profile Water play aside, there will be no shortage of activities for little cruisers.  When they’re not exploring the tropical ports guests can rollerskate or bash in the bumper cars in the seaplex, check out the view from above in the North Star or sail through the sky in the Ripcord by iFly. Over the next couple weeks we will be bringing you all of the new developments as Royal reveals them.

Royal Caribbean Takes Quantum of The Seas To The Next Level With Innovative Tech Options For Vacationers

With just under three months to go before Quantum of the Seas welcomes vacationers, Royal Caribbean has started to reveal more details about this revolutionary cruise boat. Quantum:Anthem of the Seas There’s no denying that Royal Caribbean has broken the mold in many ways when designing this ship.  Well known for leading the industry with their onboard amenities, Royal will be taking the cruise experience to the next level by introducing ‘sky diving’ at sea, bumper cars and the North Star – a pod that will allow guests to pivot above the water for an incredible view of the ship and the island they are docked at. North Star - Quantum of the Seas This past week the cruise line announced that they will put in place RFID WOWbands, an optional onboard identification system than can be used instead of/or in conjunction with the SeaPass card.  Just like the bands we have seen at Disney, the WowBand will allow you to make on-board purchases, access staterooms and access the Royal iQ, an app that gives cruisers the option to manage details during the vacation, including a convenient calendar that provides at-a-glance views of their program.  The WowBands will be offered for an additional $2 and are water proof so you can wear them throughout your entire cruise. Royal Caribbean Wowband As cool as this sounds it is just beginning of the incredible technological advancements Royal is planning for their guests. SMART Check-in will allow guests to generate boarding documents online, upload their own ID photo, and receive digital boarding confirmation.  By the time they arrive at the cruise terminal for departure, Royal Caribbean guests can go from “sidewalk to ship” in 10 minutes with no check-in counter, no forms to fill out and no lines to stand in. Guests will be able to track luggage in real-time on their smartphones.  Luggage will be tagged curbside with RFID technology at drop-off, and guests can monitor their bags’ progress through key points en route to the stateroom.  On departure, the process is reversed. Quantum’s onboard Wifi network will operate with unprecedented bandwidth using satellites launched by tech partner O3b Networks.  With speeds that match fast broadband connections onshore, guests can be online 24/7, no matter what personal device they bring onboard.  Guests can watch streaming video, check email, share images on social media and enjoy face-to-face video conversations – even in the middle of the ocean.
“Even when they are getting away from it all on vacation, people want to be able to connect,” said Lutoff-Perlo.  “Our satellite network will make things possible at sea that could never have been done before, and will make all the difference in the way guests share their Royal Caribbean experience.”
Aside from the seaplex complex, we haven’t been given many details about the kid’s areas around the ship. There are rumors that the ship will have a water slide inside the H2O zone, but they have yet to be confirmed by the cruise line. On Monday, however, Royal showed how the family cabins will be configured.  This will perfect for multi-generational vacationers who are looking to stay together while on board without having to book large suites. Quantum of the seas family connected suites With this category of staterooms, you will get 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms and a balcony for everyone to enjoy.  In total, you will get 575 square feet of space inside and 216 square feet of balcony. From images that have been shared the ship looks to be coming along quite nicely.  As part of their 99 days to Quantum countdown  they will be sharing new details every day. We look forward to keeping you up-to-date on the new spaces and experiences you can expect on board!

Cabin Livin’ At Letchworth State Park, NY {Video Tour}

This Summer when we decided to visit the Finger Lakes for our end of the Summer road trip Letchworth State Park was at the top on my list as one of the places we wanted explore.  But while researching lodging options in the area it became apparent that the most convenient place to stay was actually inside the park. Letchworth State Park gorge overlook Letchworth State park has lodging options for vacationers of all budgets, but to balance budget and comfort I zoned in on their cabins.  In total there are 5 cabin areas throughout the park.  Having never been there I was at a loss as to which location would be the best for us so I chose the most comfortable unit in the A section and crossed my fingers.  As luck would have it I made a great choice.  Not only is the A cabin area close to the main falls, but the units offered everything we needed while visiting the park. Letchworth State Park - Cabin #19 A Cabin area First, there are three entrances to the park; Mount Morris, Castille and Portageville.  Because we were coming from Ithaca we entered through the North Entrance at Mount Morris, which is at the very top of the park.  Admission into the park is $8/vehicle but the visitors center is 15 miles from this entrance.  If you are staying at the park admission is free, but you must already have reservations for it to be waved. The C Cabin area, the first lodging area you will come to, is just a couple miles from the Mount Morris entrance and adjacent to the camping loops.  The park’s Olympic swimming pool is also close by.  If you are visiting the park to see the Falls they are located quite a distance – approximated 10 miles down the road. Cabin area A has a small playground and a laundry facility and shower area. Letchworth State Park - Laundry & shower facilities A cabin area Our cabin, #19, came with a screened in porch, kitchen, dining area and an open space, with 2 additional beds. Letchworth State Park - screened in porch - Cabin a area Along the back of the cabin there were 2 bedrooms with 2 twins beds each and a two-piece bathroom. The kitchen had a full size fridge, a sink, a microwave and a stove with an oven. Letchworth State Park - Kitchen area A Cabin For our family of four this cabin was perfect. My husband and I pushed the two twins in the one bedroom together to make a queen and the boys slept in the second bedroom together. Letchworth State Park - Cabin bedroom - Cabin A Area Our cabin had four heat registers; one in each bedroom, one in the bathroom and one in the main area so you are completely covered if it gets cold at night – which it did. To recharge or power your devices there are 6 electrical outlets in the cottage. We loved the location of this camping area, the trails and the amenities close by. Letchworth State Park - kids play are across from lower Falls pking area We were walking distance to a bigger park for the kids and the lower falls restaurant, which offers a diverse menu for visitors or campers. Letchworth State Park Lower Falls Restaurant Please see the Video Tour Below: Because it was outside of peak season we were able to book the cabin for a few nights.  If you are looking to stay between Jun 21st – August 23rd, you can only book the units in this area for a week at a time from Saturday to Saturday. What is the difference between the cabins in the different blocks?
  • A Cabins(22 cabins)  – $115/night($460/week) and have 3 rooms, which sleep 6 people.  Inside they have a screened in porch, cold running water, a toilet and your choice of propane or electric heat.  The area has a central shower and washroom. In the Summer they rent from Saturday – Saturday
  • B Cabins(22 cabins) –  have 3 rooms, which sleep 6 people.  Inside they have a screened in porch, cold running water, a toilet and your choice of propane($115/night or $460/week) or a stone fireplace($108.75/night or $435/week).   In the Summer they rent from Sunday-Sunday
  • C Cabins(17 cabins) –  are located in the North section of the park and have one room that sleeps 6 in Bunk Beds.  They have a ‘rough interior’, no interior cold water and are offered with Wood ($65/night or $260/week)or electric heat(83.75/night 0r $335/week).  Most of the cabins rent Saturday to Saturday, with the exception of #3, 10 & 11 which rent Sunday to Sunday in the Summer($77.50/night or $310/week).  The area, which has 17 cabins, has a central shower and washroom.
  • D Cabins(10 cabins) – located close to Inspiration point in the South end of the park.  Eight of the ten cabins in the area sleep 6 people in bunk beds  These 8 units have electrical heat and 4 offer porches($71.25/night or $285/week).  The two additional cabins only sleep two people($30/night or $120/week).  None of the units in this are have interior running water, but all have access to a central shower and washroom.  In the Summer these cabins can be booked from Saturday to Saturday.
  • E Cabins(10 cabins) – These one room cabins sleep 4 people($41.25/night or $$165/week).  These cabins do not offer heat and the area only has washroom access. Campers in this are can use the shower facilities in the Cabin D area – which is 3 miles away.
*The prices quoted above are based on the 2014 fee schedule*  They should be used as a guideline.  For the most up-to-date prices please visit Letchworth State Park’s website.  What to bring:
  • Pots, pans and any utensils you will need to prepare your food for the week.
  • Dishes, cups, soap, towels,
  • Bedding and pillows
  • Firewood
  • Bikes, ride ons or scooters to get around the park.
  • A table liner.  The table inside our cabin was clean – but ‘sticky’.  Having a cover would have been a bonus.
  • Radio
Tips:
  • If you are looking to stay close to the main falls camping areas A & B are your most comfortable options.  The D cabin area is close to inspiration point, but they only offer bunk beds with no interior water or toilets.
  • The pool is 14 miles away from the A&B cabin area. There is a pool in the South side of the park but it is not currently in operation and won’t be for the ‘unforeseeable’ future.
  • If you are staying in the A&B cabin area the easiest way to enter the park is through the Castille entrance.
  • There is a speed limit inside the park and it is enforced by park police. It starts at 40mph goes down to 25 and then lower to 15mph in some parts.
  • If you are looking to have a campfire the wood you use can only used if it was transported from less than 50 miles from the park due to insect risks. The store on site sells wood as do many places we spotted on the way into the park.
  • The lower falls restaurant is a great option if you are looking for a quick bite.  The ladies that work there are very nice and the food is quite good!
  • The park taps into the local water supply so water from the tap in your cottage is drinkable.

Trekking & Zipping Through The Trees in Collingwood

3
When we started the planning process for our girls getaway bachelorette weekend the plan was to find a place that had a lot to do at night, and also some cool places to visit during the day.  While there are lots of places that offer adventure Collingwood also has a great night life, which made it an easy choice.  Caves, hiking and lots of great places to eat and shop?  We were sold! Collingwood Village Located between the ski hills of the Niagara Escarpment and Georgian Bay, Collingwood has really grown into a four season destination.  In the Winter visitors can hit the slopes, but in the Summer there are a lot of really great places to explore. While planning our trip we were looking for a one-stop place that offered a package that included a variety of activities. Eco-adventures is located close to the caves, suspension bridge and their tour prices were very reasonable. Our tour started with an equipment fitting and a weigh in to ensure our zip equipment would be perfectly set for each of us.  After getting suited up we headed off to see check out the view from the suspension bridge.  But not before learning a little bit about the poison ivy that grows pretty wild throughout the area.  So if you are hiking without a guide please learn a little bit about what the poison Ivy looks like before heading out because it is literally everywhere. Poison Ivy Collingwood scenic caves tour Our first stop was the incredible suspension bridge, which opened in 2003.  The story of its construction is also pretty impressive.  Normally a bridge is built from the ground up, but in this case it had to be built horizontally as environmental preservationists insisted that the trees below, which are rare red oaks, not be harmed or touched in any way. Suspension bridge - Collingwood scenic caves tour Following a bit of a hike we arrived at the treetop trekking area.  After we paired up, we were educated on how to navigate the trees safely while connected to the overhead wires.  I’ve never been afraid of heights but for some reason this part of the trip was a little stressful for me. Tree top trekking - Collingwood scenic caves tour The boards were thin and wobbly.  The corners were tricky, and even though I knew I would be okay if I fell, I just didn’t want that to happen.  In total there are 16 trees to navigate through before you hit your first zip.  It took us about between 40-60 minutes to get through the course.  A newbie, it was all a little foreign to me but still adventurous. Treetop trekking Collingwood scenic caves tour Once we hit tree 16 we zipped down to the ground and then headed off to check out the caves. first zip - Collingwood scenic caves tour Collingwood is well known for their caves so I was excited to check them out.  Our tour, however, only included a small portion of the caves, but the wristband you get when you check in gives you access to the area for the rest of the day so you are free to explore after you are done. Collingwood scenic caves tour After a quick trip through the caves we arrived at the top of the mountain, and the location for our last zip.  1000 meters high, I was a little freaked out waiting for my turn, but once I jumped off the platform the ride down was incredible. Ziplining - Collingwood scenice caves tour I thoroughly enjoy my day out in Collingwood and look forward to coming back to further explore the area.  Adventurers who want to zip some more can also try out the Twin Zip.  It is an additional price, but offered as a great discount if you are already booked on a tour. Twin zip - Collingwood scenic caves tour TIPS:
  • Bring bug spray and sunscreen
  • There is a weight/height restriction so if you want your kids to participate on the tour you should check with the company on the specifics.
  • All visitors must wear hiking boots or running shoes.  No sandals are permitted – no exceptions.
  • Because your bag must stay with you at all time – even while going down the zip line, it is best to bring a backpack or fanny pack to carry your belongings.
  • Make sure you pack a camera or GoPro the views on this trip are pretty awesome.
  • A granola bar and water is served after the first zip, but if you think you’ll need more pack that in your bag.
  • The tour is about 3 hours.

Experience Life in the 1800s At Black Creek Pioneer Village

I love historic sites, but often when I’m trying to teach my boys about how far we’ve come in the last couple centuries it’s hard for them to imagine.  Heck, they can’t even grasp the fact that I didn’t have an ipad growing up.  Over the last couple years one of the best ways I have found to give them a better appreciation of history is taking them to various historical sites. Established more than 50 years ago, Black Creek Pioneer Village is a museum that shows life in 1860’s rural York County. black creek pioneer Village Anchored by the Stong Family Farm, which is in it’s original early 1800’s location, this town includes 40 historic buildings that have been transferred to, or rebuilt, on the site from local communities. When you visit you are able to wander the grounds and check out the town and its buildings at your leisure. We started our tour at the tinsmith shop and then made our way to the Edgely Mennonite Meeting House.  The oldest surviving meeting house in Ontario, this log structure was constructed with first growth White Pine in 1824.  Amazingly the benches and stove are original furnishings. Located next door is accompanying drive shed, which was originally constructed in 1860. Black Creek Pioneer Village - Edgely Mennonite Meeting House As you make your way down Maple Avenue you will come to a photography studio and the event Pavillion, which houses a visitor snack bar and washrooms.  Visitors can also grab a bite in the Half way house located just one street over. Across the street the town hall, which was built in 1858 was used by the village council and the circuit judge.  Local meetings, concerts and other community events were also held here. Black Creek Pioneer Village - Town Hall Next door you can see how rugs were weaved or how flyers and newspapers were created at the print shop.  This building was originally built in 1850 as a Temperance hall, but was re-purposed in the 1860’s as a weaver’s shop and printing office. The doctor’s house across the street gave us a look at how a middle class family lived in the 1830’s.  This one, which came from Brampton is complete with wall to wall carpet in the parlor, a square piano and a horsehair couch.  Out back kids can try their hand at carrying the buckets of water to the house or explore the heritage garden. Black Creek Pioneer Village - the doctor's house The Mackenzie House, which was built in 1830 and expanded in 1850 to include a kitchen, shows how mom and dad made a living, while keeping the family close.  Here dad ran a repair shop and mom was a seamstress.  The rooms in the front were designated for dad’s business and the kitchen at back of the house was where mom sewed garments for the locals.  Here a guide showed us how sewing machines during this time stitched sideways, as opposed to front and back. Black Creek Pioneer Village - vintage sewing machine As you make your way through the town your will see villagers dressed in period wear heading from building to building, as well as a horse drawn carriage which takes visitors around the town. Black Creek Pioneer Village - horse drawn carriage A highlight for us was seeing the Stong Family Farm.  This expansive property was the home of the Stong family until the late 1950s when it was sold to the museum.  Daniel and Elizabeth Stong arrived in the area in the early 1800s and built their first house, which still sits on the property.  In 1832 their second home, was built with hand sewn timber.  This two-story, seven room  house features a big kitchen, a parlor and the original foundation.  The house, including many of the household items inside, is original. Black Creek Pioneer Village - Stong Farmhouse The couple kept a large variety of livestock including sheep for wool.  Inside the Stong’s first house a worker showed us how the wool was dyed and spun to be used for clothing.  Today, many of the Stong family are buried in the cemetary located at the very top of the property behind the church. Blac Creek Pioneer Village church If you travel behind the farm there is a path that takes you directly to Roblin’s Mill. Moved to the site in the 1960’s the five story mill was taken down piece by piece and transported from its original location in Ameliasburg Prince Edward Island after it was designated to be demolished.  Inside a staff member is on hand to demonstrate how the flour was ground and transported through the building.  During its heyday this mill produced 100 barrels of flour a day, and ran 24 hours a day. Black Creek Pioneer Village - Roblin's Mill Just across from the mill is the jewel of the village.  Dickson’s Hill School is a typical one-room school house .  It was moved from Dickson Hill, a small community in northeast Markham and is designed to the recommendations of Egerton Ryerson.  A week after our visit popstar Katy Perry visited the museum and posed in the corner wearing the school’s famous dunce cap. Black Creek Pioneer Village - Dickson's School House The collection of buildings in this village are not only impressive, but they are inspirational in helping both the young and old  learn more about our predecessors.  The staff at Black Creek Pioneer Village was wonderful in answering our questions and teaching the kids little facts about this era.  I highly recommend a visit if you are in the area. Families looking to stay on budget will love that kids are FREE Monday to Friday during the months of July and August.  My admission was $18 and parking was $7.  I brought snacks and drinks so our cost was less than $30 for 3!

Get Your Build On At Legoland Toronto’s Discovery Center

Every parent will attest that it’s a challenge to keep your kids going through out the Summer.  We have spent quite a bit of time sightseeing, but my kids also love amusement style visits as well. A couple months ago I visited the Legoland discovery here in Kitchener(St. Jacobs) and was pretty disappointed that there was very little for kids to do aside from a retail space and some building tables.  For that reason I have put off visiting the Discovery Center in Vaughan because I wasn’t sure it would be worth the money. Recently though, I have seen friends on social media sharing photos of their kids there and thought it would be a great place to spend the afternoon. So a couple weeks ago when we were close by I decided to stop in and see what the discovery center was all about! Legoland Discovery Center Toronto First, the Legoland Discovery center is located at the Vaughan Mills mall, just outside of Toronto.  For the easiest access you can park in parking lot 4.  When you arrive the entrance to the center is split into two areas; admission and a store.  Be prepared to spend money when you come out because you exit through the store. Once inside visitors can start by taking a couple pictures that are edited with Lego themes in them – bricks falling from the sky, characters, and different scenes.  Definitely a fun memento. Legoland Discovery Center Toronto - Factory Tour Next you can explore the brick factory before riding Kingdom Quest, a laser tag type games that challenges visitors to zap as many targets as possible while riding on a cart through a maze.  The kids loved this but were too interested in the scenes to actually zap anything. Legoland Discovery Center Toronto - Kindom Quest ride From here you will make your way through Miniland.  Whoa. Was I ever impressed.  This cool display was designed to reproduce some of Toronto’s, and Ontario’s most popular areas including the Skydome, waterfront, CN Tower airport, many of the buildings in the downtown core, and even Niagara Falls complete with the Whirlpool car ride. Legoland Discovery Center Toronto - Miniland At night This display fades between day and night to show the city in all lights. Legoland Discovery Center Toronto - miniland Once you exit Miniland it’s game on!  Kids are now free to roam the spacious area that is divided into many different play areas for little ones of all ages. Legoland Discovery Center Toronto - LEGO Duplo play area There is a Build and Test racer track, Duplo Village for toddlers, Lego Friends play kitchen and Karaoke area and a fun earthquake building center.  My boys however gravitated immediately to the Fire Academy located closer to the back of the play area.  Here they climbed through a maze of tunnels and slides for about an hour. Legoland Discovery Center Toronto - Fire Discovery Afterwards they rode Merlin’s Apprentice Ride and then went back in to the climber for more fun. Legoland Discovery Center Toronto - Merlin's apprentice ride I believe that you can bring your own snacks and drinks into the play center, but there is also a cafe that sells sandwiches, salads, veggies and dip and lots of other quick bite options.  They also sell socks for $1 for parents(like me) who aren’t aware that kids can only play in the Fire Academy if they are wearing socks. Once my guys explored every area – twice, we got in line to watch one of the movies at the 4D cinema. Recently they become very fond of the LEGO TV shows so this was another hit for us.  I’m not sure how many different movies that have but they are rotated throughout the day so that you can see a few different ones during your visit. In total we spent about 3 hours at the Legoland Discovery Center, but I’m sure my kids would have stayed longer.  There is a lot to do and it was a great way to burn off some end of the day energy. Legoland Discovery Center Toronto - LEGO Racers I have heard some people say that it can get quite crowded, and for that reason we chose to arrive at around 4 o’clock in hopes that we would miss the middle of the day rush.  It worked.  There were a lot of people leaving when we arrived which meant we didn’t have to wait long(if at all) for many of the attractions. If you are planning to visit I highly recommend purchasing your tickets online.  There can be up to a $4 per person savings if you do it this way.  At about $18pp(online prices) it is not the cheapest place we have visited this Summer, but the experience is all inclusive so there aren’t any additional costs once inside so that is a bonus. It is also worth mentioning that Vaughan Mills is a great mall so you may also want to leave some time to check out the shops!
