Family Reportedly Stuck In South Korea After After Son Decorates Dad’s Passport

When we travel the one document I take the very best care of is our passports.  I have a special wallet that I keep them in and never ever hand them over to the kids.  As we all know they are the ‘key to the world’, and not so easy to replace – especially when you are outside of your home county.  A Chinese family learned this last week when their pre-schooler got a hold of his dad’s passport – while they were travelling. The child proceeded to add some extra flair to the document including drawings of the rest of the family, their pets and dad got a new do, a beard and a lip enhancement. The finished product is completely unledgable document, which means the family will have to stay in the country while they are able to issued a second one. The distraught reportedly dad posted an image of the defaced passport on weibo.com.  Many quickly called the image a hoax after it was pointed out how consistent the writing was – for a 4-year-old.  It was also noted that Chinese passports have a thin laminate over them for easy scanning that make it difficult for a drawing of this nature without pressing very hard on the paper, which there is no evidence of. Dad Chinese Passport written on by 4 year old Regardless of the image’s validity it serves as a reminder to parents that kids may not be aware of how precious these documents are.  They are your lifeline when you are outside of your country. Here are some tips we use while travelling to keep our passports safe.
  • Keep them together.  Even if you are travelling with teens, always have one person hold onto the passports. This makes it easy to quickly to do a count every so often to ensure you still have them all.
  • Once you arrive at your destination lock your passports up in the room safe or hide them in a very good spot.  The room safe is always the number one spot to store important documents, but if there isn’t one you’ll need to get creative.  Hint: Your sock drawer is not an option.
  • Always keep a photocopy of your family’s passports with you.  I keep ours in a different location than where we store the originals.
  • Before you leave home copy down the consulate’s information in the event one of your passport’s go missing.  Know what you need to do before you get there.  When I renew our passports the office gives me a book that lists all of the offices all over the world.  I carry that in my wallet when we travel.

13 Year old Reaches Top of the World’s Tallest Summit

3
At 13 years old she stood at top of the world’s tallest mountain. Malavath Poorna, an Indian tribal schoolgirl became the youngest girl  to climb the Mount Everest on Sunday and says she dreams of becoming a role model for tribal children. Malavath Poorna Speaking after her incredible feat, the young girl said that she hoisted the Indian flag at the summit and also left a photograph of Dalit leader BR Ambedkar there. According to officials her effort is all the more noteworthy because she climbed the peak from the more difficult Tibetan side. Most climbers attempt the 8,848-metre (29,029-ft) Everest from the Nepalese side, which is easier. But Poorna could not do so as Nepal does not allow someone under the age of 16 to climb the mountain from their side. Mount Everest wikipedia World’s youngest Everest climber – American Jordan Romero ascended the peak in 2010 when he was 13 years and 10 months old. Poorna at 13 months and 11 months old thus became the second youngest person in the world to achieve this tall feat. Poorna was accompanied by Shekhar Babu an experienced mountaineer, her friend Anand Kumar, a 16 year-old-boy from a poor family like hers, and a group of sherpas. Speaking through a satellite phone at the Everest base camp on Wednesday she said,
“I was initially afraid, but the training I received helped me overcome my fear. I never thought of giving up.” “The aim of my expedition was to inspire young people and students from my kind of background. For a tribal like me, opportunities are very rare and I was looking for one opportunity where I could prove my calibre,” she says.
Poorna also adds that the one thing during the expedition that she did not like was eating ‘packed food’ and she missed her mothers home-cooked food a lot, especially her fried chicken. Both Poorna’s parents are agricultural labourers with an annuam household income of Rs. 35,000 or 595 dollars a year. She lives in a small tribal village in the state of Andhra Pradesh in southern India. The young girl enrolled herself in a training program for outdoor activites after her parents and villagers encouraged her to participate. She prepared for the Everest climb in mountains of Darjeeling as well as Ladakh. Poorna learnt about the deadly avalanche that killed 16 sherpas on the Nepalese side of the Everest just days after her arrival at the base camp but she says that the news did not deter her and she has already made her resolve to climb.
Of the view from the top of the world, she says, “All around me were mountains. It was very beautiful.”

Dr. Beach Names Top 10 U.S. Beaches For 2014

Few people would argue that the perfect beach makes the perfect vacation. Stephen Leatherman, a.k.a. “Dr. Beach” has been ranking beaches for 23 years, and uses 50 criteria, with rankings from 1 to 5, in his evaluation process of swimable beaches. Factors he takes into consideration include beach width at low tide, sand softness and color, wildlife, pests (such as ticks and mosquitos), available amenities and public safety. And once a beach takes the top spot it is retired to make room for others. This year that honor goes to Duke Kahanamoku Beach in Waikiki Hawaii. Duke Kahanamoku Beach, Waikiki, Oahu, Hawaii
“The east end of Waikiki Beach is where all the big hotels are and that’s where most people go, but Duke Kahanamoku Beach is pretty far away, on Waikiki’s west end, near the Hilton Hawaiian Village,” said Leatherman, director of the Laboratory for Coastal Research at Florida International University in Miami. “It’s got the widest stretch of beach in Waikiki and is protected by an offshore coral reef, which makes it a good beach for families with children,” he said.
Kahanamoku Beach has been on the list many times, even placing second last year behind Main Beach, East Hampton, N.Y.  In January however, Oahu made all beaches on the island non-smoking, which will work to preserve and enhance their beauty.
“Cigarette butts in the sand are disgusting,” said Leatherman. “Some people think beaches are a giant ashtray, and I don’t like that idea at all. When I go the beach, I go for nature. I don’t want to have to put my hand down on a cigarette butt someone else was smoking.”
Florida, Hawaii and many East coast beaches round out the rest of the list. 2. Barefoot Beach Bonita Springs, Florida Barefoot Beach Bonita Springs, Florida 3. Air Canada’s First 787 Dreamliner Promises a Luxurious Travel Experience

0
In its debut flight Air Canadas first 787 Dreamliner already succeeded in becoming the talk of the town. Toronto’s Pearson airport saw the aircraft land on its tarmac this Sunday carrying 100 of the airline’s employees on its maiden voyage. Here is a sneak-peak before the dream aircraft is officially displayed to media and public. Air Canada is the first Canadian airline to fly the new aircraft, and is expected to play an important role in the airlines expansion strategy internationally. AC7008 is the first of the 37 Boeing 787 aircrafts that Air Canada plans to have in its fleet. Air Canada Business Class cabin Calin Rovinescu, President and Chief Executive Officer of Air Canada said,
“This is an exciting day for all of us at Air Canada as we bring home our first Dreamliner. With the introduction of the 787 into the Air Canada fleet, we are set to further strengthen our position as one of the world’s leading global carriers.”
He added,
“The Boeing 787 Dreamliner with its range, passenger capacity and operating efficiencies is virtually custom-designed to allow us to grow in international markets on a cost-competitive basis, and our new on-board product will enhance our position as North America’s leading airline.
Benjamin Smith, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer also said that with this aircraft they were premiering their new three cabin interior. Air Canada Business Class cabin
“With the Dreamliner we are premiering our new three-cabin interior. It features the next generation lie-flat pod in International Business Class, a new Premium Economy cabin and our redesigned Economy cabin with our upgraded In-Flight Entertainment system available free at every seat.”
The carbon-fibre wings have a supreme flexibility that helps the aircraft give higher fuel efficiency. The wings flexed up on take-off from Washington as well as on landing at Toronto airport, mimicking a birds flight action more closely. If the wing aerodynamics are to marvel, the windows are what could make the in-flight experience spectacular. The windows are 30 percent larger on a Dreamliner than on a similar sized plane and an LED switch can darken or lighten the window when needed by the passenger. According to Air Canada, these windows are the largest of any present aircraft and thus can give a much wider outside view. Air Canada 787 Dreamliner larger cabin windows There are 251 seats – 210 in economy, 21 in premium economy and 20 in business class. Guests in the luxurious business class cabin will be seated in lie-flat Executive Pods.  The personal entertainment screen with touch handset, at 18 inches, is the largest offered by a North American airline in business class. Universal power and USB outlets are available at each seat, as is a new espresso and cappuccino service. Air Canada 787 Dreamliner Business class flat screen tv Less padding and small variations in the designs of the seats has helped give more leg space to the traveller. In business class, lie-flat pods can be extended into a fully flat sleeping position 80 inches in length.  Air Canada has also added an adjustable pneumatic cushion headrest offers a massage feature, unique for an airline in business class. Air Canada 787 Dreamliner business class seat Air Canada’s Premium Economy cabin on the 787 Dreamliner has 21 seats in a 2-3-2 configuration providing 38-inch legroom and generous 19.5-inch seat width and 7-inch recline.  Each seat is equipped with a 9- or 11-inch enhanced definition intuitive touch personal entertainment screen, as well as universal power and USB outlets. Air Canada’s Premium Economy cabin service, unique in North America, offers premium meals, complimentary bar service and priority check-in and baggage delivery at the airport. Air Canada 787 Dreamliner Premium Economy cabin Air Canada’s Economy cabin has 210 slimline seats in a 3-3-3 configuration providing personal space consistent with the comfort of Air Canada’s current Economy cabin. Each seat is equipped with a 9-inch enhanced definition intuitive touch personal entertainment screen with USB outlet and a universal power outlet available at arm’s reach. Air Canada 787 Dreamliner economy cabin Re-designing of the overhead bins has given more headroom and it is surely goodbye to adjusting, turning and twisting luggage because a standard size carry on luggage can be easily put in the cabin, even with the wheel-side first. Air Canada 787 Dreamliner larger overhead bins Interestingly, Air Canada says that the cabin air will make passengers feel less jet-lagged and that seems to be the case. It is because of a system called gaseous filtration according to Boeing and also because the atmosphere on the plane is the equivalent of 6,000 feet above sea level. In older planes this was 8,000 feet above sea level. The Dreamliner actually cruises at an altitude of 43,000 feet but inside you will feel like you are flying at a much lower level. Screen Shot 2014-05-20 at 10.12.51 AM The Cabin lighting is another feature that might jazz up the Dreamliner experience. It has been designed and planned in such a way that it makes transition to new time zones during a long hour flight much easier and comfortable when you sleep or wake up in-flight. The new 787 Dreamliner will be operated from Toronto-Haneda in July, and the first existing route to be converted to 787 Dreamliner operation will be Toronto-Tel Aviv scheduled for Summer 2014. Air Canada will announce its plans for additional deployment of the 787 at a later date. SOURCE
